We made the gear we kept looking for.
Mytilus began with a lifetime outside, years of broken equipment, and one backpack that did not exist.
Where it started
Raised between mountain weather and salt water.
Growing up in New England, outdoor life rarely belongs to one season. Winters meant skiing and snowboarding. Warmer days were spent hiking, climbing, camping, sailing, fishing, boating, and water skiing. The common thread was movement—between coast and trail, dry land and open water, clear skies and fast weather.
That kind of use is hard on equipment. Seams open. Coatings give up. Hardware corrodes. Attachment points fail precisely when they are needed. After enough years of destroying gear, the weak points become impossible to ignore. So do the details that make a product genuinely useful.

The idea became concrete during the search for a backpack that could move through an entire life outside: a dependable everyday carry, truly waterproof for boats and the coast, comfortable enough for long approaches, resistant to saltwater corrosion, and equipped to carry skis, a snowboard, fishing rods, or camping equipment.
We call it a modular backpack not because the bag itself is modular, but because it is designed to work with the rest of your equipment. Skis, a snowboard, fishing rods, and camping equipment can all become part of the same carry system.
Every option solved only part of the problem. Dry bags kept water out but carried like barrels. Technical packs carried well but could not be trusted around the ocean. Modular bags accepted gear but became bulky, complicated, or vulnerable in weather. The complete system never appeared.
Eventually the answer became obvious: if the right product could not be found, it had to be made. The Whitecap Waterproof Carry System became the starting point, and Mytilus was born.
Why Mytilus
A mountain beneath the sea.
Mytilus is named for Mytilus Seamount, an undersea mountain in the New England Seamount Chain. The same ancient hotspot track is tied to both the undersea peak and New Hampshire's White Mountains—a hidden geological connection between the two places that shaped us.
The name holds the whole idea: ocean and mountain are not separate worlds. The best equipment should move between them as naturally as the people who use it.
What we believe
The standard is useful life.
You may notice that Mytilus does not release a sprawling catalog. That is deliberate. A great deal of excellent equipment already exists, and we are not here simply to make more. We make the products we need, the products we cannot find, and the products we believe are worth sharing with the world.
Build past the weak point.
A torn seam, corroded buckle, soaked compartment, or awkward carry system tells us exactly where the next version must be better.
Make it worth keeping.
We believe premium gear should earn its price through materials, construction, repairable thinking, and years of useful life.
